Free Mind Athletes for Hope Dinner Conversation

We are excited to invite you to join us on March 5th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Parkland Magnet Middle School for our Free Mind & Athletes for Hope Dinner & Conversation on the connections between Mental Health and Substance Use.

The Free Mind program, by the CDC, is a prevention strategy to promote mental well-being specifically, but not exclusively, to athletes and their families. We have partnered with Athletes for Hope to host in person dinner and conversation on mental health. The panel includes

  •  Board-Certified Psychiatrist, Dr. Mena Mirhom, MD, FAPA
  • 2024 Olympic marathoner Mo’ath Alkhawaldeh, and
  • National Soccer Hall of Famer, John Harkes

Panelists share stories about the stressors they have faced on their paths to success, and how they learned to find balance and nurture their own mental health to prevent mental illness and substance use. The conversation with school athletes and their families aims to share insights and strategies that families and peers can use to help build protective factors to mitigate mental and substance use challenges, and to learn to navigate inevitable daily and extraordinary stresses.

We are hosting the event at Parkland Magnet Middle School to highlight that need for these conversations and efforts to start earlier than most think. Though we invited school athletes and their families specifically, we welcome all commUNITY members and families because no one escapes stress. The key is having the skills and supports to navigate it and mitigate long-term negative impacts. We hope that you can join us.
